As we welcome the arrival of a new month, it feels as though March slipped away like a peaceful Sunday afternoon nap—comforting yet fleeting. With April’s arrival comes a bounty of opportunities for our yards to truly begin to dazzle, not to mention the added bonus of extra Saturdays to get our hands dirty.

The clean-up, pruning, and weeding we all did in March have beautifully set the stage for the next chapter in our journey to excellence. If you haven’t yet, be sure to catch up on last month’s article here. This month, we’re ready to dive deeper into tasks that promise to elevate our outdoor spaces from merely maintained to marvelously magnificent.

April To-Do

April's to-do list is all about laying the groundwork for a lush, vibrant summer. Here's what we've got on the docket:

  • Garden preparation

  • Early planting

  • Lawn preparation and maintenance

  • Irrigation schedules

  • Tree care

Garden Preparation

As April unfurls its petals, our gardens beckon for attention. Preparing the garden bed is the foundation for your summer garden plantings and your bounteous fall harvest. Start by applying a generous layer of compost or well-rotted manure into your soil. This not only enriches the soil with essential nutrients but also improves its structure, enhancing water retention and aeration. Remember, healthy soil fosters healthy plants, setting the stage for a flourishing garden.

In this phase of readiness, consider mapping out your garden space. Plan where each plant will go based on its sunlight, water, and soil preferences. Keeping these keys to success in mind can turn a good garden into a great one. Embrace this time of preparation as an act of creation; your efforts now are the first brushstrokes on the canvas of what will become a vibrant garden.

Early Planting

April is a great time to sow the seeds of hardy vegetables and flowers directly into the soil. Peas, spinach, and lettuce can withstand the cooler nights, while marigolds and pansies will add a splash of color to your garden's palette. Planting now is like sending an RSVP to summer: "Yes, I'll be there, and I'll be beautiful."

Lawn Preparation and Maintenance

Your lawn is waking up from its winter nap and might be a bit cranky. Ease it into the summer months by giving it some love and tender care. Start by removing dead grass and thatch by gently raking the grass. Be sure to wait until the grass is dry, as raking wet soil can dislodge your grass.

With your lawn canvas now clear and primed, the next step is to nourish your lawn with a slow-release fertilizer. Ideally use one boasting a minimum of 20% nitrogen. Utilizing your trusty spreader, ensure you distribute the fertilizer uniformly across the lawn to prevent the dreaded fertilizer burn. If the skies aren't promising rain soon, a gentle watering will help the fertilizer dissolve and seep into the soil. Following the specific watering instructions found on the fertilizer bag. This careful hydration unlocks the full potential of the fertilizer, setting the stage for a lawn that's not just surviving, but thriving.

Allow a couple weeks to pass after applying fertilizer, giving your lawn time to absorb the nutrients and begin its lush expansion. Then, it arrives at the perfect moment for the season's inaugural mowing. Adjust your mower to a height that delicately trims the tips of the grass without cutting too close to the soil. This thoughtful approach encourages healthy growth and signals to your lawn that it's time to awaken and flourish.

Irrigation Wisdom

April showers bring May flowers, but your irrigation system brings peace of mind. Now's the perfect time to set up a watering schedule that's as efficient as it is effective. Early morning watering gives your lawn and plants a head start on the day. Avoid evening waterings to keep those pesky fungi at bay.

As spring graces us with its presence, the need for water is modest. Your lawn only needs about 1-2 inches of water per week in the spring months. The thirst of your garden, however, varies with what you've planted. Consulting a plant guide will offer clarity on the hydration needs specific to each garden inhabitant. Be mindful of rainy days and schedule rain delays into your irrigation programming when necessary.

Tree Care

Whether your yard is graced with an orchard's bounty or adorned with decorative trees, tending to these leafy giants is a task we all share. Correct pruning techniques are crucial to crafting a masterpiece. By attending to your trees with care and consideration, you nurture their growth, ensuring they continue to enhance the beauty and vitality of your surroundings for years to come. Here’s a great guide to pruning fruit trees.

Tools and Supplies Checklist

  • Garden gloves: Because fashion and function can coexist.

  • Rake and spade: For the diggers and the doers.

  • Pruning shears: For giving those bushes and trees a much-needed spa day.

  • Compost: Because your plants deserve a gourmet meal.

  • Seeds and seedlings: The future stars of your garden.
